Vacation Messages
Users of the GCRC's mail server can generate vacation messages when
they plan to be out of the office for a period of time. You can create
your vacation message and switch it on using a web form, accessible from
within the Medical Center and Bellevue.
Before you leave for vacation ...
- Use the URL http://gcrc.med.nyu.edu/vacation
- You will need to authenticate with your kerberos ID and
email password as shown below:
login: "kerberosID@msgstore"
password: [your email password]
For example, if your kerberos ID is "smithj01", you would
log in with username "smithj01@msgstore"
- Follow the instructions on the web page for filling in
the form.
- Remember to check the
box marked "Enable vacation notice". If this is
not checked the notice is not processed and your
vacation
messages will not sent.
- Hit "SUBMIT"
- Any reply message automatically generated by the server using
your vacation message will be treated as "second class"
mail by the server,
and
therefore take longer to be delivered.
Note to Mac OS 10 Users
We have been made aware of users of Internet Explorer having difficulty
making changes to their vacation message settings. Please
use Safari, Mozilla, Firefox or some other to set your options
correctly. Internet Explorer for Macintosh is deprecated
and will no longer be supported by Microsoft.
When you get back from vacation ...
... return to this URL and un-check the "enable" checkbox. This turns
the vacation message off. Remember to "SUBMIT" the change.
Message Filters
The same URL (https://gcrc.med.nyu.edu:7633/mailbox_filters/) can be used to
enter mailbox filters to control the acceptance or rejection of mail
based on criteria you set. You might use these to gain control over messages
from specific sources. Mail that you know you do not want (based on its
source) can be discarded (and lost irreversibly and permanently) by setting
the correct filter.
Remember that the best way to control spam,
is to use the filters built into PMAS.
PMAS's "blocklist" feature allows
similar control with a simpler web interface. You should probably never need
to use these message filters. But if you do, be very careful to monitor your incomming
mail stream to be sure you have not eliminated mail you need. Return
to the web page regularly to "tune up" the filters you have set and keep
them up to date.
