Submission Due Date: January 4, 2008
The GCRC is offering support for a Mentored Medical Student Clinical
Research Program (MMSCRP) whereby a medical student could take time off from
medical school to engage in a mentored program of up to one year of
supervised participation in clinical research, didactic coursework
related to patient-oriented research, and/or acquisition of laboratory
skills that can be applied to patient-oriented clinical research efforts.
Support is available from the GCRC grant at a salary of up to $20,000,
plus up to $5,000 for other relevant expenses. Selection of the recipients
is based on a competitive review by the GCRC Advisory Committee (GAC).
Guidelines for the program are as follows:
Eligibility of students/mentors:
Students should be in their second, third, or fourth year when they
apply. A medical student could take time off from medical school
to engage in a mentored program of up to one year of supervised

that can be applied to patient-oriented clinical research efforts.
A Mentor should be a faculty member at the NYU School of Medicine.
Submission requirements:

by the student applicant after consultation/revision with mentor).
It must include title, hypothesis, background, methods, plan
for data analysis, and an explicit statement of the time allotted
for the project. At least three weeks before the submission due date, applicants must contact the GCRC Biostatistician at 212 263-0363 for help in preparing the biostatistical plan.

degree of involvement, plans for supervision of the student,
and confirmation that he/she has worked with the student to
plan design and implementation of the proposal.
All items should be emailed to Hal Rosenblatt by January 4, 2008.
Selection criteria:
All proposals are reviewed by the GCRC Advisory Committee (GAC). The
GCRC Program Director and the Associate Directors will designate awardees based
upon the reviews discussed by the entire Committee and resulting in a priority
score. This decision will be based on additional information such as
commitment to the project, additional support, and potential for success.
Evaluation plan:
The student writes and defends a thesis on their work (one method
of evaluating success). Outcome measures that will be evaluated will
include production of abstracts or manuscripts and long-term "tracking"
of career paths.
